Mid Level Math Education
The Middle Level or Secondary Math major prepares candidates to be state certified to teach math in grades 6-8 or 7-12, respectively. Numerous job opportunities in both public and private schools are available. One hundred percent of those who complete our program pass the state certification tests and find employment immediately following graduation or are accepted into graduate school.
Math teachers accumulate many skills and knowledge (such as curriculum and instruction, and administration) that allow them to move into other career areas. With some additional coursework, math teachers can add the following areas of specialization: English as a Second Language, Special Education, Gifted Education and Math Specialist. With a Master’s degree, teachers can be certified as counselors or as principals.
St. Gregory’s University students in all teacher preparation programs must apply for admission to the Department of Education, complete an application and interview with education faculty. Admission criteria include: an updated Summary of Field Experiences, a written personal Philosophy of Education, successful completion of the St. Gregory’s University course “Foundations of Teaching” ED 3012 (or equivalent), a cumulative GPA of 2.5, Oklahoma General Education Test passing score, “C” or better in required education and/or major (content) courses, five recommendations and completion of Education Major Portfolio to Checkpoint 1.

- Actuarial science takes mathematics and statistics and applies them to finance and insurance. Actuarial science includes a number of interrelating disciplines, including probability and statistics, finance, and economics. Check out Be An Actuary.
- Computer science is the study of the theoretical foundations of information and computation and their implementation and application in computer systems. Mathematicians, with their training in logical and precise thinking, are highly prized in this field. See the student section of the Association for Computing Machinery for career advice.
- Operations research is an interdisciplinary branch of mathematics that uses mathematical methods to arrive at optimal decisions to problems in maximizing or minimizing things like costs or profits. The eventual intention behind using Operations Research is to elicit a best possible solution to a problem mathematically, which improves or optimizes the performance of the system. The group INFORMS is the world's largest society devoted to operations research/management science.
- Mathematical biology or biomathematics is an interdisciplinary field of study. It models natural and biological processes using mathematical techniques and tools. Results have been applied to areas such as cellular neurobiology, epidemic modelling and population genetics. - Cryptography is the practice and study of hiding information. Cryptography is considered to be a branch of both mathematics and computer science. Not just for spies anymore, cryptography applications include the security of ATM cards and computer passwords.
- Finance is a field that studies and addresses the ways in which individuals, businesses and organizations raise, allocate and use monetary resources over time, taking into account the risks entailed in their projects. Mathematicians can build models to help explain and predict the behavior of financial markets. Several schools offer Master's degrees in Financial Mathematics. Each candidate will complete 75 hours of field experience in local school districts prior to student teaching.
Additionally, our students are members of the Teacher Education Association (TEA), a pre-professional organization of students currently preparing for careers in education. Members of the TEA may choose to join either the Student Oklahoma Education Association (SOEA) or the Student Professional Oklahoma Educators (SPOE). Both organizations offer benefits to teacher education candidates and provide numerous professional development opportunities. Each semester, the TEA has a Meet and Greet to welcome new education majors. Other activities of the TEA include the SGU Christmas Festival and tutoring in local schools.
We are proud of the fact that 100 percent of our Math Education program completers pass the state certification tests and find employment immediately following graduation or are accepted into graduate school. We have Math Education alumni from SGU in school districts throughout Oklahoma. Math majors who teach in Oklahoma for five years receive an incentive bonus from the State Regents of Higher Education.
