The SGU Intramural Program exists to create a spirit of participation so that individuals may develop a greater sense of balance through their SGU experience.  Intramural events in their essence will accentuate the further development of community when participation is rooted by the values of integrity and excellence.

General Policies and Regulations for St. Gregory’s University Intramural Program.

     I. Individual Eligibility

All students, faculty, staff and monastic community of St. Gregory’s in good standing shall be eligible for intramural competition.

No player may participate on more than one team.

An athlete is barred only from that sport in which he/she is an athlete.  All athletes must have permission from their coach in order to participate in any intramural sport.

Any student who is placed on disciplinary probation may not participate while the probation is in effect.

     II. Team Eligibility

Any official student organization on campus may enter intramural competition, including residential hall floors.  Independent teams may be formed by individual students, faculty, staff or members of the monastic community as long as all team members are members of the St. Gregory’s community in good standing.

An organization may enter more than one team as long as no player participates on more than one team.  Each team must fill out a separate roster.

Under no circumstances will a team be allowed to pick up ineligible players even though the captains of both teams agree.

No more than 50% of a team roster may be composed of student athletes from the same varsity team.  The 50% rule also applies to actual individuals’ participation during game/match.  (No more than 2 varsity athletes on court of 5-5 basketball)

     III. Eligibility Accountability

A team shall lose by forfeit any game in which an ineligible player is used.

The player who is caught cheating on eligibility will be barred from intramural play or a time period determined by the intramural staff.

All players can be asked to show their valid SGU ID prior to each game/match.

The Intramural staff are not responsible for checking on player eligibility.  This is the duty of the team captains.

The Intramural staff reserves the right to review each case on an individual basis.

     IV. Forfeits and Disqualification

Players who repeatedly demonstrate poor sportsmanship and/or unacceptable behavior or teams as a whole with this characteristic will be disqualified from intramurals for the remainder of the semester.

A deliberate attempt to injure another player will automatically result in disqualification of the player from intramurals for the rest of the semester and continuing throughout the next.

If an intramural participant is ejected from any intramural contest, he/she is immediately ineligible from further access to or competition in any intramural activity until he/she is cleared by the Dean of Students or designee.

     V. Team Captain Duties

        Submitting rosters on time.
Knowing eligibility rules, individual sport rules and forfeit rules.
Informing team members of game times.
SGU email account will serve as primary contact source.

     VI. Medical

SGU and its staff assume no responsibility for injuries received by participants during intramural activities.  Students, faculty and staff are reminded that their participation is completely voluntary.

     VII. League Format

Most team sports and selected individual sports will play a round robin schedule with other teams in their league.

Other individual sports will be organized in a single or double elimination tournament structure.  This determination will be made depending on the number of participants in that sport.

A few team sport events may only consist of a tournament.

     VIII. Conduct and Sportsmanship

Team captains are responsible for the conduct of their players.

Players and spectators are responsible for their actions prior to, during, and following the games.

     IX. Rescheduling Games

In case of inclement weather, the intramural staff will be the final authority on whether the contest will be played as scheduled.  On the field, the intramural staff assistant will determine whether play will continue.
