Students Back on Campus for Fall Semester
Students from across the nation and around the world journeyed to St. Gregory’s on Friday, Aug. 23, to renew friendships and make new ones as part of the university’s Move-In Weekend activities.
In addition to checking in to the dorms and receiving their class schedules, both new and returning students took part in a variety of activities that were scheduled throughout the weekend, including New Student Orientation and Convocation.
Students also received their first looks at a number of improvements that have been made to the campus during the summer. The most obvious changes occurred to Benedictine Hall, as the restoration of its four, iconic towers continued. The steel infrastructure for the building’s south towers was installed in June, and the steel for both north towers was put in place on Aug. 19, just as the final pieces to the masonry of the front towers was beginning to wrap up.
“I came here because Benedictine Hall looked like a castle,” says criminal justice senior Janeth Vasquez. “When the towers went down, I was like, ‘I’m not a princess anymore,’ so seeing them go back up, I’m like, ‘Yeah!’”
Final assembly of the masonry of the north towers is scheduled to be completed by November, two years after the four original towers were irreparably damaged by a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in November 2011, during the fall semester of Vasquez’s freshman year.
“They were here when I got here,” Vasquez says, “and I want them here when I leave.”
The university’s cafeteria and science labs were also completely renovated and updated over the summer to not only better nourish students’ bodies, but also their minds.
“The cafeteria is great, the way the remodeled it,” says history senior Gustavo Escobar, who also competes on SGU’s cross country and track teams. “It’s very elegant.
“I like that our school is getting remodeled and building again. It’s great to see [Benedictine Hall’s] towers going up again. We identify ourselves through those towers, so it’s great to see them back.”
Fall classes at St. Gregory’s begin on Monday, Aug. 26.
